Westwood, Vivienne

   Fashion designer
   Vivienne Westwood began her career as a designer in 1971. She partnered Malcolm McLaren in running a boutique which has had various names (most famously, Sex, in 1974) and came to prominence in the mid-1970s as the fashion designer who accompanied McLaren’s launching of punk in London. Noted for revival gear and anti-fashion, she began with 1950s retro teddy boy styles, and moved through new brutalism and punk bondage to a new romantic look (see new romantics), with pirates, highwaymen and then hobos. She first showed under her own name in 1982 and started a menswear collection in 1990. By 1998 Westwood’s collections were variously marked by tweeds, strapless mini-crinolines, corsets, twinsets and Regency costumes. She won the British Fashion Industry Designer of the Year Award in 1990 and 1991.
